Ramair vs PRORAM: Intake & Panel Filter Buying Guide

Ramair PRORAM BMW S58 intake kit with carbon lids

Ramair offers foam filters, PRORAM pleated filters, complete induction kits and packages that retain the original airbox. The most useful comparison starts with the format you want and the exact engine application, rather than treating every product as the same kind of intake upgrade.

This guide explains the differences and highlights the checks that matter for BMW and VAG applications in the Ramair and PRORAM range.

Ramair foam and PRORAM pleated filters

Ramair foam products use foam filtration media. PRORAM products use a pleated filter format; the relevant product listing identifies the material and specification. You will often see JSK and PRK versions for the same broad application, so compare the filter medium alongside the included pipework and housing.

A shared application does not guarantee that every detail is identical. Read the component list and any sensor notes. Filter cleaning products and treatment also need to suit the actual medium supplied.

Format What changes What to check
Replacement panel filter The filter element inside the original airbox Shape, dimensions, engine and quantity required
Foam induction kit The listed intake arrangement, using foam media Chassis, sensor layout, pipework and steering side
PRORAM induction kit The listed intake arrangement, using a pleated filter Exact PRK part number and supplied components
Panel filter and hose package Filter plus the specified intake hose or elbow Whether an elbow is included and how the package connects

BMW B58: compare the right generation

For the listed 2016-on M140i, M240i, 340i and 440i B58 application, compare the JSK-249-BK foam kit with the PRK-249-BK PRORAM kit. Both listings describe a carbon-lid arrangement, while the filter media differs.

Use the chassis as well as the B58 name. Do not assume an F-Series kit fits a later G-Series car.

BMW N55, S55 and S58 need separate kits

The original F87 M2 uses a different engine from the M2 Competition and G87 M2. For listed N55 applications, compare the JSK-310-BK foam kit and PRK-310-BK PRORAM kit. The PRK-144-BK pleated kit is a separate S55 option for the M2 Competition, M3 and M4.

For S58 applications, the JSK-276-BK foam kit and PRK-276-BK PRORAM kit use carbon lids. Ramair specifies Euro 6 engines for both and excludes Euro 7 engines. Check the exact engine specification before ordering a newer vehicle.

Golf GTI and R: generation and engine matter

A Mk6 GTI, Mk7 GTI/R and Mk8 GTI/R should not be treated as one intake application. The EA113/EA888 distinction, engine generation, turbo connection and MAF arrangement can change the required product.

Within the listed Mk7 range, compare a conventional induction kit with the PRK-148-BK oversized system or the PRK-316-BK ProMax enclosed kit. These are different layouts, so inspect the component lists and connections before choosing.

For a 1.8T 20V application, an 80mm MAF kit and a 70mm MAF kit are different choices. Compare PRK-103-80 and PRK-103 against the sensor housing on your car. Neither should be selected as a diesel intake.

Would a panel filter suit your car better?

A replacement panel filter retains the original airbox. It is worth considering when you want to keep that layout rather than move to a cone-filter conversion. Compare the PPF-9822 BMW S55/S63 filter or PPF-1194 BMW B48 filter with your existing element and listed application.

Dimensions are a useful cross-check, but they do not replace vehicle and engine identification. Confirm how many elements the airbox needs and what the listing supplies.

Sound and power: choose with realistic expectations

An induction kit can make the engine and turbo more audible, but the effect depends on the design and car. An enclosed system and an open arrangement may give different results. Decide how much change you want for daily use before selecting a format.

Power figures from a modified test car do not establish an increase on your own vehicle. Engine calibration, supporting parts and test conditions matter. Use the exact fitment, filter format and kit contents as the basis for your decision.

Maintenance and installation

Follow the instructions for the filter supplied with your kit. Foam and pleated filters can need different cleaning products and treatment. Inspect the connections, sensor mounting and filter seating during routine servicing, particularly after use in dusty conditions.

For the S58 carbon-lid kits, Ramair provides INS-276 fitting instructions. Read the instructions before dismantling the original intake and check the supplied parts against the application.

Ramair and PRORAM FAQs

Is PRORAM a separate vehicle fitment?

It identifies a filter range, not universal compatibility. Use the complete part number and application notes.

Can I replace a foam kit with the pleated version for the same car?

Check the exact sensor layout, pipework and connections first. Similar titles do not establish that every component is interchangeable.

Does a carbon lid mean the whole intake is carbon fibre?

No. The carbon-lid products describe carbon fibre covers over the heat shields. Read the listed materials for the remaining components.

Can you check my car before I buy?

Contact Nineteen72 Performance with your registration or VIN, engine details and a photo of the existing intake. Include the part number you are considering.
